How to help your dog tackle car anxiety

For many of us, taking our dogs for a ride in the car is one of the best parts of owning a dog.

But for some dogs, car rides can be anxiety-inducing. If your dog is one of those pups who gets nervous in the car, dont worry!

There are a few things you can do to help your furry friend feel more comfortable on car rides.

Tip 1

Get them used to the car gradually
If your dog has never been in a car before, or if they haven't been in a while, it's important to get them used to the car gradually.

Start by sitting in the car with your dog for short periods of time with the engine off.

Then you can move on to starting the engine and sitting in the car together for a bit. Once your dog is comfortable with that, you can try taking them for short rides around the block.

The key is to go slowly and let your dog get used to being in the car at their own pace.

Tip 2

In the car, it's essential to have a comfortable seat for your dog. A sloping seat where their belts buckles protrude out can make lying down difficult and painful for your dog.

If you don't own a doggy car seat, I suggest bringing a nice thick blanket that you can fold up and place on the chair!

The blanket should cover the seat belts and pitch of the seat and give them a place they can associate with settling down and resting.

Tip 3

Keep the routine as normal, don't change anything. It's just another day at the office.

Feed as normal, as long as it is not 40 mins before.

Make sure to give your dog plenty of exercise before getting in the car so that they are tired and less likely to be anxious.

Using these tips travelling in the car will definitely be alot less stressful.

Is it time to talk about investing in a quality car seat?

It's no secret that motion sickness is the leading cause of dog travel anxiety.

Now earlier in the blog we talked about laying a blanket down on the car seat as it will make the ride more comfortable.

A nice and padded car seat will allow your dog to sink in and enjoy the ride without having to constantly trying to counterbalance the motion of the car.

The purpose of this blog is not to try and sell you a car seat. So we are not going to do that.

But if you do find you are struggling to find a solution for your dogs travel anxiety.

We suggest taking a look at some of our testimonials.
